The school is open once a year to the public, and it's worth planning ahead to see the bucolic campus. The centerpiece, and the school's symbol, is the hot shop designed by architect Thomas Bosworth. The crude but powerful structure is an open-sided pavilion of peeled-fir logs and massive hand-split cedar shakes. The concrete floor steps back from the roaring hot shop furnace to follow the natural contours of the hill, an example of the masterful siting that makes the cluster of early buildings a Northwest version of the Acropolis. Transportation, lunch and a tour are included.
